Expanding a Trinidad HousePORT OF SPAIN, TRINADAD AND TOBAGO -![]() The father of the expected child, a retired carpenter, agreed to take responsibility and be "boss" for the essential work. He and his brother donated a minor amount of labor, and the mother's father agreed to give $200 to the project. A local lumber and hardware store gave us materials at half cost provided we would "tell noone," and employees of WHO, the ILO, UNESCO, and members of a local church congregation donated weekend and evening labor. A church donated money to run a power line 100 yards to the house, and volunteers installed a small water line near the house. The "boss" orchestrated all the labor, and the design took a different turn under his supervision. Volunteers cleaned and stregnthened the existing shack and then lifted it some 7 feet on poles, creating another room directly under the original. They built another room adjacent to the original that was also placed on upright poles, and they constructed a stairway to access the two upper bedrooms. (The lower rooms served as kitchen, washroom, and storage.) Volunteers also improved the existing outhouse. The project director was Jefferson N. Eastmond.
