South African Housing ProjectEAST LONDON, SOUTH AFRICA - The
provincial government attempted to solve acute housing problems by providing
a basic housing start in available tracts. Eligible families or individuals
could qualify to receive one concrete slab with a water faucet and a
toilet and agree to finish the remainder of the house on his/her own.
A qualified single parent desired to acquire a home, but had no funds. Worldwide agreed to provide $1,000 to purchase materials and arranged for a near-by technical college to furnish teacher supervision and student labor to finish up the austere but functional house. Worldwide agreed to provide the $1,000 for each of three homes each year. John Eastmond was the project director.
