Building a Home in the Dominican RepublicSANTIAGO, DOM. REP. -![]() Worldwide gave a few hundred dollars to help a man raise money to construct a house for his friend, who, with his family, lived in "a sewer." The man eventually raised $16,000 with only a bit more help from Worldwide. A committee of donors and the family being moved then commissioned Worldwide to help construct the home. The cost of materials alone exceeded the amount of money available and labor costs were well over $6,000. The family preferred to use those resources to construct two rooms--the kitchen and the bathroom--and the home's foundations. The resident would finish it when his sons grew older. The cost of building materials had doubled in just a few months and was rising daily, so project director, Jefferson N. Eastmond, assembled the family and advised them to build immediately. The pressing need to finish while materials were inexpensive led the family to take more responsibility. Their engineer cousin helped, and Worldwide employed a full-time carpenter, recruited labor, and purchased materials. The family agreed to gradually pay back the costs incurred by Worldwide,
and the family moved into the house in a few months. To clarify any of the above, contact: web @ weriweb.org Copyright 2006; All Rights Reserved |
